It is not 40 hours since series of terrorists attacks in Mumbai, it is one of the most horrible things I have seen in my life. My heart goes out to all those effected, policeman who gave their life and people still struggling stuck surrounded by terrorists. Great work by Indian soldiers, Good luck.

One disappointing thing that has emerged is irresponsibility of media. Role of media is to provide information to the public but in a proper way and taking care of that they are not divulging important information. I am watching TV channels – NDTV, IBN-CNN, India TV, Sahara Samay, Star News and many other and have realized that none of them are  doing their job properly. In this unfortunate event they are trying to sensationalize the information and acting irresponsibly.

First mistake they are making is providing sensitive information such as movement of NSG and Police forces to public. I am sure, this information is not useful to public at this time. At this time, people need to find out where their relatives are, who is injured, which hospitals are people taken to, what blood type is needed and where. These are much more important information if provided to public it would be helpful.  Yes, people need to know what area are safe, what is the progress but giving step by step information is not useful. There are rumors (and probably true) that the same information is retrieved by terrorists and can be used against the brave souls who are trying to protect our lives.

Incidents like Sahara Samay showing (in real time) commandos climbing a specific stair to get into windows is completely rubbish. They could have jeopardized the complete operation. Similar situation happened when CNN (US) correspondent asked their counterpart from CNN-IBN, isn’t showing these videos on air not proper, can this information be used by terrorists? The CNN-IBN correspondent did not reply to that question.

Second issue, camera person showing injured people and not many people to help around. Why is the need to show it to the world and specially when you could help those people. You could save someone’s life by helping them. Instead they were continuously showing, these people need help. A message is enough after that its an overkill, trying to blow incident out of proportion. When you are at case, help people. You are humans first!

Third issue, this was an interview of someone who have been saved out of Taj. It’s not even minutes that the lady has come out of such horrible situation and our reporter is asking silly questions. At one point of time it was evident that the reported was pushing the limits so that lady starts crying. So much for TRPs, those people have been under tremendous pressure for last 24 hours, they need peace and rest, they need a doctor or psychologist, not some insensitive reporter blurting out questions whose answers are known to everyone.

Fourth issue, their was a lot of improper information. It is the responsibility of media to provide proper information and make sure it does not create panic in public. If necessary some discretion can be maintained and information provided at later stages. I understand it was a chaotic situation, but still relevant information is must. Over a period of 8 hours, there was news flash more than 10 times that ‘Taj is free of terrorists’. I am still not sure it is free or not, just because I don’t trust you guys anymore. Then we have some people from India TV who claims to have talked to terrorists and are aware of demand, and they even have audio stream of that. Here we have two points to take care of, government should be contacted at first place and its up to government that they want to make it public or not (definitely it would never be made public). Second thing, if it is false information, then you should never be allowed to be part of media again. You guys are shame on your profession and does not deserve to be here. Remember, aim of terrorists is to terrorize people, to make things unstable and you are helping them by acting irresponsibly.

Fifth issue, don’t be insensitive. I heard some reported using the word – ‘interesting’. I had no words after that. People are dying and our reporters can use words like these. This is not over, there were many cases of similar usage.

Sixth issue, why is media going to places where it should not go. For instance, I saw some reporters inside the Taj lobby showing the logo and what importance it has for people. Yes, we understand its heritage but that news can wait for some time. Why going in and risking your life and others to things which can be delayed, still that place has few terrorists and anything can go wrong. If you don’t care about your life, its ok but don’t create problems for others. (I will say, it is responsibility of government too to take care of incidents like these, a complete cordoning of area should be done with no one allowed till it is completely safe).

Last issue is about social media, twitter played an important role in information dissemination and we just not only got information but images (from people like Vinu). But, there were a lot of rumors too. I think, like bloggers, twitter users should be responsible too. I am not questioning anyone intentions but make sure information is correct and we are not leaking some important information, we are not sure who all are monitoring things.

One last thing, I understand everyone does not have the same impact of the news but please don’t make those things public. I saw a question on twitter stream (not directed to me) – You are not from Mumbai, then why are you concerned[from one Indian]. I won’t give answer to this question, I understand that readers of this blog feel the pain in same way as I do.

Godspeed soldiers!

(Blog title taken from one of the tweet replies)

PS: In my view every media person should watch the movie ‘Mad City‘, its tagline says it all – One man will make a mistake. The other will make it a spectacle.

    >Impact of Blogging have not changed but I will give you the reason why I wrote this.

That post was just after the Ahemdabad blasts, my mental condition was 'Helplessness', I was eager to do something but still I could not do anything. This time I was in the same state of mind, but that time I was addressing general public, this time it was meant for educated media people who were making mistakes. These are the people we expect least mistakes from.

Adding to same topic, my views have not changed but I see some small light at the end of tunnel, maybe because I feel the impact of Obama's victory (which is credited someway to technology)and the way Indian bloggers/twitter users have reacted to it. At least now people want to vote and are believing in themselves. I do not think a single post will make the difference but awareness amongst the educated always helps. Would surly love to discuss it in detail with you.

    KV,
Social responsibility and moral values are the least to be asked from a person/organization in the present day society.

But, stooping to such low levels by the India TV media - should be uncalled for. I read somewhere yesterday that Supreme Court ordered a temporary ban on broadcasting of all news channels in Mumbai as their reports tend to frighten the people.

I would like to if there is any change in thoughts from you since Impact of Blogging that made you write this.
  • These media just want to increase their TRPs even at the cost of commandos lives.. covering live inspite of getting instructions was one of the most irresponsible thing done by media. They are not ready to accept how critical the issue is..

There is a need of strict regulations to control media in such crisis. If all news channels had delayed of broadcasting by 30 mins, that would have controlled information leakage to terrorists. Atleast, this could have been easily done.
  • agree with what you have said..

while the attacks by themselves are shocking, the callous reaction of the India TV channels has been depressing beyond imagination.. cant understand if they even realise the levels they are stooping down to

time for the media to actually introspect, else they will lose what little credibility they have..
  • Perfectly matches with my thoughts for the past 2-3 days... All the issues. I actually want to act on it but don't know how. I have written to news papers many times through emails, but nothing ever happened so I'm wondering how can we reduce this thing if not end.

I might as well go ahead and accuse CNN-IBN of aiding the terror-mongers. Its 5:00 PM in India and CNN_IBN has George Koshy reporting LIVE on the grenade launch by the NSG at the Taj in such details and focussing their camera images at the target and the NSG launcher that such information can be of help to no one except the terrorists and possibly harmful to the security or the public.

    weel said...
if terrorist inside taj are killing with guns these terrorists(reporters) from news channels are killing with their cameras and insensitive activities...
they seems to care very much abt sensationalising news and TRP and revenue of the channels..

how terrorists are created...when you could make a person insensitive and uncaring to his neighbour you have created a terrorist.. are these insensitive reporters not terrorists???
  • I was just thinking what I would have done if I was in place of that lady. Probably "get the f**k out of here".

"imilar situation happened when CNN (US) correspondent asked their counterpart from CNN-IBN, isn’t showing these videos on air not proper, can this information be used by terrorists? The CNN-IBN correspondent did not reply to that question."

It's a sad thing that Media is not realizing it's social responsibility. Also our people!

Yesterday twitter was full of #mumbai tweets about the latest move of NSG and Commandos. If terrorists were capable of tracking tweets or some third hand from outside could pass this sensitive information to the holed up terrorists, they could easily plan their attack.

People and Media should realize the sensitivity of the situation and they should stop spreading the sensitive info.
  • "You are not from Mumbai, then why are you concerned"? How can someone say that? honestly at a loss for an answer for someone who asks such stuff. As for Mad City, ur dead right. The Media forget the implications of their words in the frenzy for TRP ratings. Situations like these cause for responsibility and awareness, not cashing in on the eyeball factor
  • this is word to word what I feel!

I wish we as cirizens could "report" media like we report spammers on twitter, FB etc. They need to be taught a lesson!
  • @prunthaban Agreeing with you on commercialization part. That is why we have DD, but because of poor funding people do not really care about them. But, is proper funding to DD the only solution?

I think, we as people are responsible for some part too. We fall into traps where they showcase some magic, "scandal" etc and give them higher TRPs. That is an encouragement to them.

BTW, I did not see any coverage of this on DD, how they did it and how controlled they were. But this event definitely calls for some serious thoughts and some laws to prevent any further problems.
  • Indian news media are worried abt their TRP rating and not about how they can be useful to the citizens at large. These news media risked the operations by their complete lack of irresponsibility. I hope blog posts like this will be a wake-up call and they will clean-up.

Recently I got a chance to attend a talk by 'Siddhartha Basu'. He said the major problem with India is News channels live on commercials whereas it is not the case with BBC, etc.
An audience asked 'What is one think you hate in the media'. He said 'commercializing news'. How true!
I don't think 21st century has anything to do with this like Nimish says. Majority of the world is progressing. Indian news channels are deteriorating day by day! Please don't blame the century for that! Then noone will not do anything to correct it!
  • Well said, it is never too early to start going over where we went wrong.

I think one of the reasons we have this huge crisis of irresponsible media coverage is that the media is not prepared, neither is its regulating authorities, to handle such a situation, so in the streets of mumbai where a thought out and well coordinated media plan could have assisted in rescue operations, and hasten help to the areas that need help, we have a free for all orgy of sensationalizing.

I think we as a nation are rather amoral, our culture lets us explain away any wrong, and is never quick to hold the responsible accountable. I hope that some notions of accountability, responsibility and the common mans role in the nations well being at large emerge from this pyre.

  • @Nimish sadly yes :(
When they show snake charmers and aliens I do not care, I just switch channels but when we need some critical information they should not mess it up.
  • Infotainment has arrived in India. Welcome to the 21st century. :)

All your informations are belong to entertainment.
  • I totally agree with you man. Though there were some really useful discussions with experts in TimesNow and help line numbers and messages tickering in the same news channel, rest was all the act of sensationalizing the news by all news channels..
