Know Your Food
Today I watched Food, Inc. and that triggered this post. Coming from India I see food in a different perspective, a nation where poverty is the main problem and almost half of
the population struggles to get both meals a day. A country which has the highest malnutrition (215+ million people) in world, food to all seems to be the biggest challenge. Then we have another set of problems related to food – adulteration and excessive usage of chemicals in farming.
When I came to US, the first thing I noticed was the prosperity and then in few days I was introduced to Wal Mart. This gave me an impression that at least this country doesn’t have problems in this area. Then I met few friends who introduced me to different set of issues that most people are unaware of. They gave me a comprehensive idea of how most of the food is prepared. At first I did not see it as problem, I thought of it as efficient use of technology. When they explained all the aspects I was surprised to find out about cruelty to animals and other ways in which food was prepared. This was not end of story, this form of preparation promoted unhealthy eating practices. Then the question was why still people don’t change? Answer was simple – lack of awareness and low cost. And here it comes back to similar problem as India- to prepare food at lower costs. In India the problem magnifies as enforcement of food related laws is not proper.
This movie provides the same insight in terms of how technology advancement has solved some temporary issues but can lead to tragic issues later. It talks about how chicken and cow are bred, kind of environment they live in, how they are used in assembly line, how genetic engineering has changed the life cycle of animals and how animals are grown specific to human taste. They further extend this approach to corn, soybean and other agriculture products and its impact on humans. Basic idea of the movie is to show how food is engineered to human needs with maximum efficiency and at lowest cost. Movie also talks about law reform needed to improve conditions and what we can do to help not only ourselves but environment as well. It’s a terrifying expose of food industry but sends a deeper message – how our habits as a consumers have degraded the way we live and that message is more important to me.
This movie is an eye opener for normal people like us who have no idea what goes behind the food counter. This should also be a lesson to developing countries on how to tackle food problems. More than 50% of world population has food related issues, we need to come up with better ways to resolve the problem rather than taking the same approach. I do not know what that approach will be but I like what one of the message from the movie – “Eat at home instead of eating out.” and “Make a point to know where your food comes from—READ LABELS.” I would recommend this movie to everyone, because awareness is the first step and always helps.
On the same topic I have another recommendation, in the form of book this time – Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health.
Update: I received many queries about me being still vegetarian and if yes, how does it impact me? I am still a vegetarian. It impacts me because I look this from perspective of consumer. How our behavior as consumer has changed over years and how that drives the corporations to change their policies. My perspective was to increase awareness among all, to understand what corporate social responsibility is and how organizations we deal with fare in it.
Top Reasons Why One Should Watch Top Gear S14E06!
Watched Top Gear Special episode where the team goes
to South America for another set of adventures.
Challenge – Crossing 1,000 miles of rain forest, desert and active volcano in a four wheel drive car bought under $3,500
Here are the reasons why everyone should watch this (unordered)-
- If you love adventure movies like Indiana Jones you will love this episode because the trio travels through rain forests of Bolivia in similar conditions. Not just the trees but they fight against insects, snakes etc
- If you want to learn how to cross a river in car and what modifications should be made with simple products. Or if you are stuck in a gully and needs to know how to build a bridge across it.
- If you like to experience how it feels to drive on the edge. I mean literally on the edge, trio drives on Yungas Road popularly known as Death Road. Not just the normal adventure but with overtaking, falling in ditch and one car without headlights at night. During one scene during that course that will drive your anticipation level to height that has never been attained before.
- Ever experienced the active volcano. If your answer is no, then must watch. It shows how much impact it has on humans as well as cars, how to survive and how trio handled the pressure at 17,200 feet.
- Ever experienced how to drive down 2,000 feet dune with more than 60 gradient. Trio tries that you to the reach the beautiful Pacific which was their goal.
These were the additional reasons over the usual Top Gear features of being petrol head, crazy, comical, “helping”, having pranks, visiting picturesque places, and sometimes reviewing cars. Its one brilliant episode that one must watch, you don’t have to like cars or car shows if you appreciate humor and nature this would be a great experience.
I just wonder how BBC makes this most downloaded TV show, unarguably the best TV show ever, better week after week.
After you have seen the episode you can check the show notes or as they like to call it Big, Fat Christmas Treat.
Movie Review – Invictus
Invictus is a simple story told brilliantly. Lately Clint Eastwood’s main strength is storytelling and this continues in Invictus. Packed with powerful performance by Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon this movie is destined for few Oscars (and some might accuse Eastwood as Oscar hungry).
A predictable story of rugby team backed by president does not impart much excitement, but blend it with emotions and nifty dialog writing you will get Invictus. There are scenes like when Francois Pienaar(Matt Damon) visits Mandela for tea or when Francois Pienaar visits the prison at Robben Island, which are brilliantly choreographed and with limited dialogues helps in invoking a barrage of emotions. Another nice part was story of a kid running in parallel and that portrays how Mandela succeeds in his ‘human calculation’. Side stories such as maid at the captain’s house and distrust among Mandela’s bodyguards help us understand the intensity of the problem and also demonstrate how things ease out as movie progresses. Full credit to Eastwood for portraying such gripping scenes and shows how with every movie he is improving as a director.
Apart from storytelling the movie excels in casting – no other actor other than Freeman could have portrayed Mandela better. His performance is of level that when I think of Nelson Mandela next time first image that would come to my mind is of Freeman. Matt Damon does justice to his part as captain of the Rugby team and blends petty well with team. End of movie credits, where they show the real rugby team, confirm why he was chosen for this role.
Non-sports fan might find the last scene bit stretched especially with lack of commentary. But the movie is not about sports, its about inspiration and emotions. Its about how Mandela’s personality and how he realized that revenge was not the part of solution but the problem itself and his amazing capability to convince everyone. Title of the movie is taken from a short poem with same name and the line "I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul" is the centre theme.
I give Invictus 4.5/5 and add it to must watch category.
Review: Truth in 24
Yesterday I watched Truth in 24 for the second time. This is a movie about Le Mans 24 hour race and Audi Team. It talks about the raceday and rest of the year, what are the preparation that go into it, what is the mood on pitwall, the kind of situations they face, the communication, trust between teammates and above all the engineering effort. The movie takes care of all the intricacies involved and point out the minutest details that are taken care of (not the how part!). The preparations before the race, parade, qualifying and the race. Factors such as night, rain, fog, tiredness and how a combination of men and machine conquer all this to win the race.
Movie documents the 2008 Le Mans race and the victory by Audi team. The movie talks about ‘human element’ involved in winning the race and how with a slower R10 they managed to win a race against faster Peugeot 908. Audi team go as an underdog and win the race with few proper judgements and dedication of complete team. This team also focuses on importance of team and its not just the drivers who win the championship. I liked Howden Haynes, the chief engineer of the team and how he worked continuously for 24 hours to make perfect decisions throughout the race. The last part of race where he argues with race driver to change his tyres is brilliant. He with his data is confident but has to convince driver on track on how the conditions are going to change is nice piece to watch. And when later driver thanks him for perfect choice, as a student of science we feel great. My favorite scene from movie is after the victory, when everyone is enjoying, Haynes just goes away and sits on a pile of tyres. That is the moment when head of the team has called him ‘secret weapon’, but he is not overjoyed, he just want to take some rest. Twenty four hours of such pressure is not just on cars but endurance test for humans too.
A must watch for motorsport lover. Either be f1, Indycar or Nascar fan, it does not matter, you will love it. Another aspect of movie that I liked is its narration, I suppose producers chose the best man to do this kind of job, Jason Statham.
Top 10 movies of 2008
1. The Dark Knight – One of the best movies I have seen in recent times. This movies was perfect in all respect – storyline, acting, screenplay, thrill. Heath Ledger would be remembered for his performance forever. This movie has set a very high benchmark for movies to come.
2. Wall-E – A animation movie with emotions, this subject is really hard to make a movie with, but this was made easy in Wall-e. Another great aspect of the movie was very less dialogues, just using the gestures to display emotions was great.
3. Cloverfield – A very good sci-fi movie, today we associate a sci-fi movie with high quality animation where a lot of money is spent of sets. This movie was different, shot with a different camera setting (looked like amateur video style or similar to Bourne Ultimatum) which added to the thrill and fun of the movie.
4. Taken – A very good thriller which was underrated. Taken did not have the new age gadgets, babes or car chase sequences but it was the old style thriller.
5. 21 – A good story along with good performances from Kevin Spacey and Laurence Fishburne. A bit of better screenplay and a bit of pace could have made it perfect.
6. Iron Man – A pure action flick for the superhero lovers, it was a perfect
solution to people complaining about lack of action from Spiderman/Superman movies.
7. Quantum of Solace – Another excellent Bond thriller, a good performance by Daniel Craig. This movie seemed to be a continuation of Casino Royale, it was not as good though. Must watch for Bond movie lovers.
8. Speed Racer – Excellent animation, thriller and a totally new way of story telling.
9. Kung-fu Panda – A different kind of animation movie, over last few years we have animation movies with similar story lines, jokes and it was becoming a routine, but this movie showed the path to next generation animation.
10. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - This movie was good, people did not like it much because of the expectations but definitely deserves to be in top ten.
Notable mentions: Vantage Point, Pineapple Express, You don’t mess with the Zohan, Zack and Miri make a Porno, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, How to lose friends and alienate people and Yes Man.

Crash
You think you know who you are. You have no idea.
After hearing a lot of appraise for the movie and three Oscars, I finally decided to watch the movie.
Movies start with a crash site and following lines “It’s the sense of touch. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We’re always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something.” I am completely lost, trying to figure out what kind of movie it is. Is it a movie dealing with crash and tragedy, love story, a mystery or something else? Usually before every movie someone tell you plot, storyline or there are gossips around. But luckily I was never part of any and was able to enjoy the movie. If I would have known before the fun would have reduced.
The movie revolves around multiple characters in the complexity of Los Angels for a period of 24 hours. It starts with a rich white guy and his wife and robbed by two blacks. Moves to a murder site where a black cop is investigating, to a place where a black wife is harassed by a white cop, to a white father who wants to a favor from black nurse, to a lock changer, to a family from different county. Now I understood the movie deals with racism. There are people who have there interests, there comfort zones, there planning and how manipulations take place. I see all this happening all around. By this time I am completely lost in movie and trying hard to find out what are we leading at, with so many different stories running in parallel I don’t see any conclusion.
Then comes the crash, and story completely changes. This is the moment when I am lost in the movie and appreciating how beautifully movie is directed and has a strong story line. In the end all pieces fall at proper place and we realize what we are today and how we act in this world. I reach to conclusion “There is good and bad in all of us.”
Being Cyrus
Yesterday went for Being Cyrus, nice movie. Some days back went for Taxi 9211 and was also a good movie. I feel good about the change in Bollywood movies. After a long wait Bollywood is moving ahead and changing its theme from same old love stories or copying.
“In the end King and the Pawn goes into the same box.” This sums up the movie. If a person understands the meaning he won’t be having any troubles in life. We are running behind everything we see but for what, in the end nothing will matter. Peace is what we need in today’s life.
