Twitter Suspends ‘F1′
Twitter suspended the account ‘F1‘ 3 weeks back and after I lodged a complaint I got a auto-generated response 2 weeks later. I filed my request again today like this:
I own the Twitter account @f1 for more than 2 years and have 4000+ followers. I have been using it for broadcasting Formula1 related news and manually broadcasting updates during the Formula1 race. I have been following every follower in the account and we engage in a meaningful conversation. These conversation include sports related details, comments, clarification, humor etc.
I am not violating any Trademark as F1 does not hold any trademark. Please refer to link here for court case ruling that- “Formula One Losses Trademark Fight“. I am not breaking any issues related to copyright, because mainly I collect information from sources such as Formula1 website, BBC F1 site and other popular F1 blogs and tweet the links for the followers. I also tweet updates during the race, but those fall under Fair Use.
I am also not trying to impersonate any person or team at F1, Formula1, FIA, or FOM. I give link to my blog instead of of Formula1.com in bio. Please look into the issue and check back the replies at @f1, where F1 fans have been requesting to un-suspend the account.
Regards
Kumar Veetrag
Twitter has suspended some other sports related account and TechCrunch has reported it here. Fan followers can follow me at FakeF1 till I get my account back.
Any suggestion how to approach Twitter and get this issue resolved as early as possible are welcome.
Twitter – Aston, CNN, Oprah, it doesn’t matter!
This post is in response to the questions asked by Mr. Tweet on his blog:
I have been using twitter for almost 2 years now and was expecting some popularity but not of this level. My opinion about Aston Kutcher Vs CNN, I do not like what is going on. It is just a publicity stunt and a rat race. Many people joining it and abandoning it after two days. Real value of twitter can be added by community, when you have similarly minded people interacting. Not by trying to decide what gift to buy for someone else. What purpose does a million followers mean? Just an ego boost.
Second, why a reputed organization like CNN has to get involved in this. It is like comparing apples and oranges. Aston takes opinion from people while CNN is just broadcasting medium. And since there is no revenue model, they should not care how many people follow them.
Third, definitely there is too much noise but it does not affect me. I follow right people and few people follow me. I use some news sources, utilities like tweetscoop, filters and my purpose of using twitter is served. I can shut anyone down when I want by unfollwing or blocking them.
Fourth, yes quality information is reduced but that depends on how we use it. Having a set of people you like and following them in appropriate. Twitter is such a generic tool that it can be molded in any use we want.
Fifth, it was not Aston who made it mainstream media. When pornographers started joining twitter, it had become mass media.
Trying FB Connect
Last few weeks have been extremely busy and was completely away from Blogging and Podcasting. Today I had some time and tried WP-FB Connect Plugin to enable commenting on my blog using Facebook login. Seems like it is working now, but I am more excited about the feature where we can have comments in thread format. At this time you can see an addition option “Connect with your Facebook Account” while commenting. So, basically it acts like OpenID with a little bit social feature.
Tried the Sociable plugin which can help build FB community for your site, but I am facing issues with FB login button, will have to work on it.
You can try out different options at Facebook Plugin Directory
To Facebook or not to Facebook?
For last few months, I have been thinking about the kind of content we are creating over the Facebook. The issue is not regarding the content but its usage, specially with Facebook as the owner of the content.
The problem started arising with the amount of applications mushrooming for the FB platform. Users are promoted for “access” but there are many concerns amongst experts that someone can write an application to bypass that process or disguise an application, whose real purpose is to gather data. A typical example of this is – when we add an application to play some game. They do not need to access our information such as birthday, marital status etc. But we have to grant that access to use that application and we don’t know what they are going to do with our data.
My second concern is regarding the way facebook is handling the data. In November 2008 FB lost all the preferences data and asked user to set there preferences once again. What if they lose some other relevant data or expose this data to some groups.
As far as data loss goes, this isn’t that big a deal. The only data that Facebook lost was preference data, not any messages, photos, videos, or the like. But preference data is also important. What if Facebook had lost everyone’s privacy settings instead of just their e-mail notification settings? It would be (slightly) more serious. – TechCrunch
Third concern is regarding the trust with Facebook. In the episode 181 of Twit, while discussing the topic of Facebook opening its API for status updates (to compete with Twitter) there were few interesting observations made by Wil Wheaton. According to him, How can we trust facebook of not selling our data to some other agencies? How can we trust that they will not misuse our data. Specially when threats like identity theft are becoming more serious, a little mistake on their part can cause serious damages.
Fourth concern is regarding the option of not allowing us to delete our account. Few days back I wanted to delete my account and I realized that there was no such option. The closest thing to that is suspension of account and that can be reactivated by one mail. Why don’t they want to delete my personal data from their servers. If I want to leave your site, I have right to erase all my information from your server.
Fifth concern is regarding the latest Terms of Conditions change by Facebook. According to new TOC, facebook has rights to all the content that we generate or upload on FB. As per Consumerist blog
Now, anything you upload to Facebook can be used by Facebook in any way they deem fit, forever, no matter what you do later. Want to close your account? Good for you, but Facebook still has the right to do whatever it wants with your old content. They can even sublicense it if they want.
Then, I have some little concerns regarding FB connect where users might be able to write cross-server scripts too and exploit Facebook.
I agree that every person who has a web presence (might)wants to be on FB. But we can reduce the amount of data that we put online. Whatever data we put, we should be comfortable enough if we lose it. I don’t think only facebook is the problem, over time we had discussed same issues with Google and any organization that grows big in size.
How Tweetdeck changed the way I use Twitter?
Twitter, the best service that I am aware of. OK, I won’t get into my love for Twitter, but this post if about Tweetdeck, twitter client, that changed the way I use twitter.
These were my main issues that I was facing
- There were a set of people I wanted to follow, but didn’t want to read each and every tweet. I just wanted to read their tweets when I was free.
- There were a set of people whose, I didn’t want to miss any of their tweets.
- There are a few celebrities (@Scobelizer etc) that I follow and I didn’t want to follow them all the time but wanted to know their opinion and check their (past) tweets in free time.
- I didn’t want to miss any instance of @kv used by anyone ( even from my non-followers). Sometimes when someone uses replies to multiple people, it does not show up in one’s timeline (replies).
- Since twitter stopped IM service, there was no way of ‘track’ option and that was one utility I miss the most.
- I wanted to use other services which use Twitter credentials to log in and their ecosystem is based on twitter. e.g. TwitPic.
How Tweetdeck solved all the issues:
I can for groups in Tweetdeck and that sorts out the problem of grouping people. I have formed groups such as Buddies, Blacksburg, Celebrities and that gives me an option to concentrate on group that I want to talk to. I can clear tweets individual group of tweets and ignore a group if I want to.

Now, I do not miss any tweets that have mention of @kv because Tweetdeck replies group not only check using API but also uses Twitter search.[Check above image, last tweet in second group is a retweet of my tweet] This has one more advantage, I reduce the Twitter API calls.
Track option can be simulated by search option provided by Tweetdeck. We can create search groups with particular keywords (f1, Yapodcast, semantic web, ces, mumbai) and can get results in one or more groups. Search functionality includes AND and OR option too for optimizing our searches.

At the same time using other services such as TwitScoop, I can which what are the current buzzwords on Twitter. That is a very fast way of getting news. (In the image above, I could see Earthquake as buzz world and just one click on it told me, people are talking about earthquake at San Bernardino, CA which occurred just 10 min back)
Not only this, I can use my other favorite services such as TwitPic, 12seconds and a lot of choices of URL shortening services. Now, I don’t have to open browser and login to multiple systems.
Shortcomings:
- Tweetdeck stores all the group and search settings on the client side only. So, if one formats the systems and reinstalls Tweetdeck he will have to create his groups and searches again. But, how often do we reinstall our system. I believe Tweetdeck team would be trying to include a server level component too, which will store all the info on Tweetdeck server. This should not be a difficult task to do.
- Tweetdeck’s groups take too much space on desktop and we have to scroll sideways. I would say, use it judiciously and you wont get into trouble like this. Any tools which provides group functionality will have to face this issue.
Suggestions
- I would like to see a tagging system included into Tweetdeck. I can create few keywords that I usually want to use as hashtags and then I can use a drop down to include them in fast way. Going ahead, there can be an algorithm which can include hashtags on its own from my set of hashtags. (I suppose this also does not need algorithm, just a call to Open Calais API can provide that functionality)
- I should be able to resize the group tab on Tweetdeck.
This twitter client proves two things, firstly, how simple tools can transform the way we use a service and secondly, flexibility and simplicity of twitter, we can mould it is any shape we want for our usage.
Tech Predictions for 2009
Posted by veetrag in Technology, Web on January 1, 2009
1. With Semantic Web gaining popularity with applications like OpenCalais, Twine and search like Powerset, we will see a flood of application in Semantic Web area. Most of the application would be in research phase but geeks would be early adopters of those and pave way for mainstream applications. Good semantic web applications would be available by 2011 only.
2. Microsoft’s new Windows 7 will help regain the MS authority. With Vista going wrong and ‘failure’ of advertising campaign the best solution would be to show the world what they are good at.
3. Google’s android will gain more popularity and we will see a new set of mobile from wide manufacturers participating in it. Soon, we will have a multi touch phone and a true competitor to iPhone.
4. Apple will jump into the field of Netbooks, we will see a variety of MBA style netbooks from apple. Apple market share in computer market will grow at much higher rate.
5. Twitter will still be struggling to find a business model for them but definitely it would have gone mainstream with exponential rise in users. Twitter will introduce ‘groups’ for everyone (currently in Japan only).
6. Yahoo would still be in bad waters. Even though they have the best semantic web app (Search Monkey, source : ReadWriteWeb) and other applications doing well, they don’t have the proper business model. Yang would be leaving and Flickr/Del.icio.us still hasn’t started making money. Yahoo will come up with more and better products but still would be struggling catching up with Google. Expect a good semantic web application from Yahoo.
7. Facebook platform will develop more and we will see better application development which will not just include the entertainment factor. We will also see a much better usage of Facebook Connect program and it will gain popularity over open ID.
8. Market will be flooded with the series of Netbook from most manufacturers. It has been proven that Netbook will be the future for power users and the idea is catching up to mainstream.
9. Microsoft will launch Zune Phone in competition with Apple and Google. It would be having the same Windows Mobile platform but the device will be completely different from current devices.
10. We will see more adoptions of SAAS and SOA approach by the enterprises. Even with developer’s love for PHP, ROR and other similar scripting language will grow enterprises would still more money into SAAS model.

Gtalk Video Compared to Skype Video
Posted by veetrag in Technology, Web on November 12, 2008
I tried to compare the Gtalk video with Skype video, using the same connection and other conditions. Here are the results :
Video on Gtalk
Video on Skype
We see the video quality on gtalk is much better than quality on skype. Video on Skype is much more grainy, edges are not smooth and when their is motion we get a blur, while in Gtalk video we do not have any issues like that. Still sound quality on Skype is better than gtalk.
Twitter acquires Summize – Endless Possibilites
The deal is done; Twitter has acquired Summize and most of its employees. I would say this is the perfect move by Twitter. Most important thing that twitter was lacking (other than stability) was a search functionality and Summize will fill the gap.
Now only thing that twitter needs to do is provide a search API which is as simple as twitter’s API. I think that’s the motive of Evan in keeping the employees. As soon as API will be out there will be many clients which will provide options like tagging and channels. By integrating search and not mot making it complex what twitter has done is maintained its simplicity and provided a way in which almost everything is possible. I would say for developers who write clients for twitter only their imagination will be the barrier, possibilities are endless.
Moving from Hosted Blogs to Personal Site
I moved my blog from blogger to personal site last week, since then many have asked me about the process and costs involved. I never thought the process would be so simple and takes just 15 minutes for complete setup.
-
Selecting a hosting site : This is the most important step. You have to select your specific needs (such as bandwidth, blog only, hosting pics). You can select GoDaddy as it is one of the best and good value for money offer. If you are looking for just blogging solution then I would suggest eWebGuru. (Thanks Harsha for this tip). Usually the plans would be costing around Rs. 800-1500 per year.
-
Selecting Domain : Another important step, you might plan to get [yourname].com/net/in etc. You will be able to buy it from the place where you are buying space. One useful tip from Thej “don’t search for a domain name and wait for it, there are people who buy it and try to sell you at higher rates“. I have faced similar situation, I searched for veetrag.com and waited for a month but lost it. Finally I had to settle for veetrag.net (one more tip, search for discount coupons on Google and you will save some money on domain+hosting)
-
cPanel : the panel for managing and monitoring is cPanel is most of the cases and I must say it is the best tool for management.
-
Selecting a blogging service : simplest service, you might think its difficult but just go for WordPress. Try out other services, but I would say once you look at the options and flexibility it provides you will love wordpress. Setting it up is single click process as hosting sites have a script which sets up database and all other things that you need to do. You can setup other services like Drupal, PHPBB, MovableType, LiveJournal etc too, they all are single click setups.
-
Tools : Use FireFTP for all your FTP operations, its a FireFox plugin.
-
Themes and Extensions : Just search for themes and try to get a simple one and customize it yourself. That is the best thing to do. Firebug will help a lot in customizing themes. Just for help on themes this is my del.icio.us links page.
Thats all guys, now looking for more inputs and suggestions from you. Good luck!
