Lessons Learned in Sports Photography
Posted by veetrag in Photography on March 5, 2010
I have been shooting sports for Collegiate Times for over a year. I started with very little
knowledge of photography and no experience in shooting sports. I have learned a lot from my fellow photographers and still there is a lot to learn. Here are some tips that fellow photographers have shared with me and I am jotting them down.
- This tip does not basically belong to photography but how to behave on field. Players should always get the preference no matter. There are always limits where a photographer can go in field, but in those limits also photographer should try to sync in background. He should be almost like invisible, so in any condition he is not disturbing any players or blocking any viewers.
- In a sport where ball is involved, always get ball in the picture. Ball in the picture always gives your viewers what is going on in the picture. I was taught this skill while shooting tennis. Taking ball out of photographs can confuse viewers what’s the player doing.
- Study the players. After shooting a particular sports for a team we know what kind of moves/shots/dunks a player has. If we are able to predict players next move in the game we can be at exact place to capture that moment. Its true that it will take many hundred bad shots but one good shot is enough to make you happy.
- Know the sport well, especially the rules of the game. It may seem trivial but sometimes when we are trying to figure out what’s going on in the game and we miss the chance. Rules also help us decide which is the perfect position to take for photographs e.g. one should know where the referee would be most of the time so they don’t block the shot.
- Study the fellow photographers and their photographs. I think this is the most important step in learning. You know the photographers that usually shoot with you and the spot they choose to take photos. When analyzing their photographs we can find out why they chose that place, what kind of shot they were looking for etc. We should also search for images from that sports and try to figure out what composes a great shot. I believe, learning from others experience is the best way.
- Its not just the action that is important, we should be able to capture the reaction as well. Since we get only one photo to tell the story of the game, we need to know exactly what is going on in the game and capture that moment. Sometimes the frustration, joy, excitement, eagerness, anger, intensity, and concentration of the player make an excellent shot. Fans, cheerleaders, half time activities and mascots are very good subjects too.
I learned a lot in last two years from SPPS photographers and seeing others shoot at Cassell. It has been a joy shooting Hokies at Basketball and Volleyball, I am definitely going to miss it.
PS: These are just few basic tips I learned, I believe I have a lot of learn. I would try to update this blog regularly based on comments/tips I receive.
Yet Another Doping Scandal
Martina Hingis’ exit following doping accusations has shocked me. After Marion Jones, Jan Ullrich-Ivan Basso, Shoaib Akhtar-Mohammad Aif I was convinced that anyone related to sports might be involved somehow, but Martina Hingis was a shock to me. I am still now convinced that she can do it.
Why do people do it, when they know that someday they will be caught, disgraced, all medals would be taken back, records would be erased. Fans, who treated them like heros will be hurt. Recently I read after Marion Jones probe was over, US Olympic Association sent apology letter to all participating countries. Why don’t these guys think about their country?
F1 scandals are nowhere compared to doping, it hurts much more, I feel like being cheated.
Chak de reloaded!

(Sequel of Chak de India)
There was a team, nobody wanted to coach, no one was ready to sponsor. But one guy stood up to the challenge, the guy who was blamed for world cup final loss and he guided the team to world cup victory in Australia.
Now we had the team, which lost badly in World cup, still everyone wanted to coach them (but one guy refused too), they had no worries from sponsors. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the guy who was responsible for numerous losses did not become coach (he is still playing the game), the team went to World cup without a coach and managed to bring the cup home.
PS: I know guys, this should be written tomorrow, but I am so excited, can’t control myself.
PPS: one more similarity, most experienced person in both teams was not the captain.
Federer Unstoppable

I wanted to write a lot, I wrote a lot to too but I removed everything, because no words can describe what witnessed yesterday. Two of the best man in the profession, fighting for the best, chasing records when face each other on the tennis court we get three and half hours of exceptionally brilliant tennis. It was an action packed game, evenly balanced and finally the best man inched ahead to take the crown. I have not seen better tennis than this.
Commentators once mentioned the rivalry between Federer and Nadal same as was between Ali and Frazier. Is this comparable? Nadal was looking desperate in the end (interview) was he tired or he has lost hope of winning against Federer (on grass)?

Ignorant me
I was at Bangalore airport, there was still 1 hour to check in. I was sitting in waiting room, no one was sitting next to me and after that there was a tall, dark familiar looking person. I started reading my book and was lost in it. After sometime I realized that the person was not alone, there were two jet officials standing there at his service. I looked at him again, similar face but can’t recognize him, he was carrying a big sports bag. I tried to recall, can’t be a cricketer, can’t be from movies then where have I seen him. Now some people have started clicking photographs and are taking autographs too. But there is no crowd, so I thought might be a south Indian movie star.
Football and MotoGP

Gary Lineker once famously described football as “a simple game: 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and in the end the Germans win.”
And for the last few years, MotoGP has followed a similar formula: 20 bikes ride around for 45 minutes and at the end Valentino Rossi wins.

Sports I like
Posted by veetrag in Uncategorized on March 30, 2006
Cricket is my favorite. It’s not just watching I love playing and can play for hours and hours at a stretch. Ask me my favorite player and its Sachin Tendulkar. As people say if cricket would be religion Sachin would be God, and I agree to it. I have seen almost all his innings and it was a delight. I still remember the innings in Sharjah after which he was named desert storm and that gave Shane Warne the nightmares. Whenever he comes to play I am so excited that I can’t sit and watch I would be standing or moving around in the room.
Formula1 is a game which I like a lot (I had a dream since I was kid to drive an f1 car once …it’s a secret dream not to be leaked out). Kimi Raikkonen is the driver I support. 2005 season made him my fav. The way he struggled in the races, coming back from P11-P12 to podium finish is awesome and have never seen before. I don’t support any constructor in particular because it all about the money you put it that gives you performance. I used to like WRC a lot but it is not much fun watching now a days.
I like Tennis also, never played it but love to watch it. Most people say it’s all about ladies tennis that gives interest to kids, and I do not deny the fact. Roger Fedrer is my favorite player. I like to watch him play with immense natural talent he has got. Martina Hingis and Monica Sales used to be my fav amongs ladies tennis. Now it is Maria Sharapova (reason not being just tennis).
I watch Football also and Arsenal and
Other sports I love to watch are Tour de France, especially because of Lance Armstrong and this time I had enough time to watch it for 22 days. Table tennis is a game which I like to play but hate to watch. Sometimes I can watch hockey when
