Why do you use Twitter?
I started using twitter to keep up to date with my friends, but as time passed it turned out to be different. I made new friends from similar interests group (something similar as micro-communities), I used it as broadcasting medium, sharing views and sometimes for updating scores(Cricket/F1/Soccer).
I was an avid blogger, but many a times I had just opinion and I wanted more views on it and could not blog about it, but with twitter’s 140 char limit, I found that perfect platform. I could ‘track’ stuff from my interest group and can find out what other people think, I could do this previously also in a very inefficient way. I would be visiting blogs, searching and then commenting, with twitter I just have to ‘track interest’, read a lot of comments and then reply back to what I like.
it has been a really great help, my blogging curve has taken the dip but still my viewpoint is shared amongst the same friends group, so I don’t mind it.
One thing I miss in twitter is ‘tag’ system. Many a times I would like to update my status but for a set of followers. Example when I talk about web 2.0, I don’t want my family members to be updated about it. So if I could tag my tweet, and then my followers can choose which tag they want to follow, it would be perfect.
Thank You for such a wonderful app!
iPod touch : review
Posted by veetrag in Technology on February 4, 2008
After using iPod for 20 days I planned to write a review, I wanted to write it as soon as I got, but that would be too biased towards Apple as first impression was WOW and I could not see beyond that, now after using it I am sure what I want and what I don’t want.
Hardware: amazing! It is extremely sleek device; I never imagined it to be this thin. I wonder how they have put that great performance in such small space. Multi-touch screen works perfectly fine, I had my inhibitions about it that it might have some bad response time or in some scenarios it won’t work, but nothing like that, it works perfectly as advertised.
Idea of having just one button on an iPod is also great.
Software: Mobile OS X is awesome! It is better than any other mobile platform I have worked on, in terms of usability, number of bugs, performance, UI it is the best. I did not have a single crash/bug issue till now, but if at the same time we were using some other mobile device, I am sure at least one ‘hang/reboot’ would have happened, considering the fact that multi-touch brings a lot more complexity to software.
Keyboard, software keyboard provided is great, in just 15 mins you will be able to master it and can type with 50% more efficiency that any current mobile type pads. Along with keyboard the spelling auto correction is another master piece, it’s much better than T9 and supports more variety of words (e.g. Satyam – don’t ask me why I checked that)
Zooming in and correcting URL is another good feature, for any correction you want to do, you just have to slide your finger over the text and you can zoom and point to position where you wants to edit, if this feature would not be present it would be very tricky using iPod.
Music: I don’t think I need to say anything here, its best as always.
Applications: Safari Browser is one great thing, but I cannot say it’s the best. I still feel there is a lot of improvements needed, plugin support it there but most of the features that you get in standard FF are not available. I do not have option to save any files, I do not have a option to copy paste (let’s say I want to share link with friends), I cannot open link in another tab etc etc. Browser needs some improvement.
Other applications like calendar, photos, music library (cover flow), contacts, photo gallery, and calculator are standard with standard Apple coolness.
Issues:
1. When listening to music and doing some other activity (like reading eBook) if you want to control volume you have to hit home key and then adjust it by going to music app, that is not great, standard iPod feature is lost there. I would love to have a way in which I can change volume from any place.
2. Apple should allow third parties to write application, it will help out a lot. Right now after jailbreaking I have access to a wide variety of apps like eBook reader, Theme manager, Contraspace (game) which truly showcase the potential of iPod.
3. iPod cannot be connected as external USB device, so even with 16/8GB storage you have to struggle transferring data.
4. iTunes is very heavy and takes a lot of system resources and if not used properly can cause havoc ( I guess everyone knows about its issues)
Tips and Tricks:
1. Use jailbreakme.com for unlocking your iPod, this will open you to immense variety of application. The repository of apps it huge and you will find a tool for everything you every wanted to do ( BSD subsystem, apache server, python, php builder, games, pownce/twitter clients and a lot more things).
2. install iPHUC on your computer and get a terminal access to your iPod, after that you can convert your eBooks to iPod format and move it to a particular directory and use it. there are a lot more options to this but I am yet to explore everything.
Reliance broadband – Worst Service Provider
Posted by veetrag in Technology on January 18, 2008
I do not know if I should call you service provider or non-service-provider. I have been complaining since last 9 days and still there is not result from your end. Every evening your technical department will call me, try to resolve the issue by using ‘netsh, ipconfig /release, ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /renew’ and fail, they will escalate the issue, promise me to resolve the issue in next 16 hours. It is now more than 200 hours and still my problem is not solved, I don’t know when will your clock complete 16 hours and my problem will be resolved. I know the issue, technical department knows only those 4 commands and age old technique of restarting computer and then antenna. But that is not helping me at all, even though I specified in my last mail that I have tried all the techniques your representative will call me again and instruct me to do same, and after that he will be blank. He will say, I will register your complain again and get me on hold. I have listened to your ‘on hold music’ so much that it haunts me at night.
Whenever technical team is unable to resolve the issue, I get a new complaint number. My complaint numbers are 62088062, 62101937, 62157399, 62199602, 62213992 (in last 4 days) and I know that this mail will get me a new complaint number. I like this process, where you close the old complain and start new complain every time so no issue gets escalated.
Even though you do not provide service for 20 days in last month you have sent me a bill for Rs.1200, how is that possible? When I talked to your customer representative, he was telling me to ‘it will be good if you pay the bill, we will get service restored in a day’. Why should I pay the bill? 3 months back in same situation we got a bill, we asked for waiver and got that too, but in next month bill, you added that as arrears. This is not acceptable.
If this situation continues I will be forced to approach the consumer court for Denial of Service and applicable damages. Kindly note.
Thanks and Regards

repair Vs ipconfig release/renew
Posted by veetrag in Technology on June 1, 2007
While replying at Arti’s post@Infublogs one question struck me, the problem I face daily.
Q: Why don’t we have same effect of repair connection through GUI and ipconfig release/renew.
My ‘repair’ never works properly while ‘release/renew’ works. I used to think that both repair and release/renew make the same OS calls, but now I feel there is something fishy.
Champions of India
Read this(Wisden – 2006 – The amazing story of the runaway train) story at Cricinfo and was wondering at How good players are born? Why we do not provide proper facilities to everyone for development? Is this the reason for our poor performance in olympics/hockey?
Very few people can overcome situations like this and can become champions. Even though we might have talent but it is lost. Who is to be blamed for this?
